The school addresses major national strategies such as climate change, the South China Sea strategy, the Belt and Road Initiative, meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation, cryosphere science, sustainable development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and deep space exploration. Based on faculty development and improved teaching quality, and aiming to cultivate well-rounded atmospheric science talents, the school has built a first-class faculty, disciplinary platform, and comprehensive talent training system.

Through long-term development, the college has established a complete talent training system from undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels. Currently, it offers undergraduate programs in Atmospheric Science, Applied Meteorology, Planetary Science, and a dual bachelor's degree program in Atmospheric Science + Artificial Intelligence. It also offers four master's and doctoral programs in Atmospheric Science (Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environment, Climate Change and Environmental Ecology), Space Physics, Meteorology, and Resources and Environment. It is one of the comprehensive universities with the largest enrollment of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in Atmospheric Science, and is an important training base for high-level atmospheric science professionals with a complete range of educational levels. The college boasts a 100% pass rate in the qualification assessment of its degree-granting programs, high employment rates and a high degree of professional matching, with diverse employment types and generally high-quality employers. Graduates find employment in various specialized fields, including meteorological bureaus across the country, civil aviation air traffic management stations, grassroots party and government organs in various provinces and cities, research institutes, and emerging high-tech companies.

The college currently has four provincial and ministerial-level research platforms and one Guangdong Provincial Atmospheric Science Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center; it also houses the Future Earth Program Global Secretariat Center ( China ) and the Future Earth Program China Committee Secretariat; it has signed a cooperation agreement with the China Meteorological Administration ( 2020-2025 ), established the Sansha City Dai Yongjiu Academician Workstation in cooperation with Sansha City, and cooperated with Zhongshan City to build a meteorological observation base; it actively promotes cooperation between the college and the National Climate Center, the China Meteorological Administration Earth System Numerical Prediction Center, and several provincial and municipal meteorological bureaus (Guangdong Province, Hubei Province, Hebei Province, Jiangxi Province, etc.) with the National Climate Center, the China Meteorological Administration Earth System Numerical Prediction Center, and several provincial and municipal meteorological bureaus (Guangdong Province, Hubei Province, Hebei Province, Jiangxi Province, etc.) to jointly train graduate students and establish practice bases.

Leveraging the geographical advantages of the Greater Bay Area, the unique geographical advantages of the academic cluster at Sun Yat-sen University's Zhuhai campus, and the platform advantages of the "Sun Yat-sen University" oceanographic research vessel and the Tianhe-2 supercomputer, the college actively cultivates a first-class talent team in atmospheric science and has established an excellent talent training support system that integrates teaching and research. The college has 207 faculty and staff members, including 109 full-time teachers, comprising 42 professors, 67 associate professors, and 47 full-time research staff and postdoctoral fellows. Among them are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 chief scientists of the " 973 " Program, 4 chief scientists of the National Key Research and Development Program, 32 high-level talents (including provincial-level talents) such as National Outstanding Young Scientists or Excellent Young Scientists, and 3 national and Guangdong provincial teaching masters in meteorology.

Since the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the college has received nearly 400 million yuan in research funding; faculty and students have published more than 900 SCI papers, including more than 40 papers in Nature (main or sub-journals), Science (main or sub-journals), Science Bulletin, BAMS, PNAS, etc.

The School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University will adopt an application - assessment system for doctoral admissions in 2026, based on a comprehensive evaluation of applicants' qualities and abilities.
