In the context of globalization and rapid technological development, marine science, as an interdisciplinary field connecting the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences, plays a particularly important role in talent cultivation. Marine science education actively responds to the national "Maritime Power" strategy and the "Belt and Road" initiative, needing not only to address increasingly complex global environmental issues but also to promote the high-quality and sustainable development of the marine economy.
The College of Marine Sciences is committed to student-centered development, striving to enhance students' learning, critical thinking, and practical abilities, and cultivating creative marine science talents capable of addressing future challenges in marine science. To achieve these goals, we leverage our excellent faculty and national and provincial-level platforms to establish a targeted curriculum system that includes foundational theoretical education, interdisciplinary learning projects, and abundant practical activities. We also strengthen undergraduate research training and foster close collaboration with graduate students, creating a team-based research environment. Through this educational model, we not only cultivate students' scientific and technological knowledge but, more importantly, cultivate their sense of responsibility and mission as future leaders in the marine field.
I. Program Overview
Marine science is a system of knowledge that studies the natural phenomena, properties, and changing patterns of the ocean, as well as its development and utilization. Sun Yat-sen University's marine science research began in the 1820s with surveys of nearshore fisheries resources in the South China Sea and scientific expeditions to the Xisha Islands. The university has always valued the development of marine disciplines, formally establishing the School of Marine Science in June 2008, which was renamed the School of Marine Sciences in May 2016. It has established a talent cultivation system including an undergraduate program in marine science, master's and doctoral programs in first-level disciplines, and postdoctoral research stations, forming distinctive strengths and advantages in four second-level disciplines: physical oceanography, marine biology, marine chemistry, and marine geology.
The School of Marine Sciences was approved as a Ministry of Education Base for Cultivating Top-notch Talents in Basic Disciplines 2.0 in 2021, the only one of its kind on the Zhuhai campus. The Marine Science major has been listed as a Guangdong Provincial Strategic Emerging Industry Characteristic Major, a Guangdong Provincial Characteristic Major, and a National-level Comprehensive Reform Pilot Major. The School of Marine Sciences has also been approved as a Ministry of Education Pilot School (Department) for Comprehensive Reform of "All-round Education" (moral, intellectual, and physical education).
