Nakhchivan State University offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs aimed at training highly qualified researchers capable of conducting independent scientific research and contributing to academic and professional knowledge development.
The PhD program is implemented in accordance with national legislation on education and science, as well as the internal academic regulations of the university.
Application and Admission Process
Applications are submitted electronically through the national centralized education application system. Candidates must complete the online application form and upload all required documents within the officially announced application period.
Applications are reviewed by an Admission Committee consisting of university leadership, faculty representatives, academic staff, and potential research supervisors. The committee evaluates document completeness, academic background compatibility, and research alignment with the chosen specialization.
A potential academic supervisor is proposed for each applicant. The supervisor conducts an academic interview and submits a written decision regarding supervision. Admission cannot proceed without the supervisor’s approval. If supervision is declined, an alternative supervisor may be proposed.
Entrance Examination Stages
Applicants approved at the document review stage proceed through the following examination phases:
- Foreign language proficiency examination or submission of a valid international language certificate
- Philosophy examination
- Specialty (field-specific) examination
Each stage must be successfully completed to advance to the next phase of admission.
Academic Training and Individual Study Plan
Throughout the study period, PhD candidates and dissertants conduct their academic and research activities based on an individual study and research plan approved by the University’s Academic Council.
Candidates are expected to:
- Acquire in-depth professional knowledge in their field
- Develop independent research skills
- Master research methodology
- Fully implement the approved individual study plan
- Pass required examinations in accordance with national regulations
- Publish scientific articles reflecting research outcomes
- Present and validate research results through academic dissemination
- Complete the dissertation research within the prescribed study period
The university provides academic support, access to libraries, laboratories, research infrastructure, and necessary equipment. PhD candidates and dissertants may also participate in academic mobility activities, research expeditions, and scientific visits, including international ones, in accordance with institutional procedures.
Annual Academic Attestation
PhD candidates and dissertants undergo regular academic attestation, conducted at least once per academic year. The purpose of attestation is to assess progress in implementing the individual study and research plan.
The attestation process includes:
- Submission of a progress report based on the approved individual plan
- Evaluation at the department level with the participation of the academic supervisor
- Written assessment by the supervisor regarding academic performance and research progress
Based on the evaluation results, one of the following decisions is made:
- Successful attestation with recommendation to continue studies
- Conditional attestation with specific requirements to be fulfilled within a defined period
- Unsuccessful attestation due to insufficient academic progress
Continuation of studies in the subsequent academic period is determined by the attestation outcome. Candidates who fail to fulfill their academic obligations or maintain academic engagement without valid justification may be dismissed from the program in accordance with university regulations.
Dissertation Defense and Degree Award
Candidates who successfully complete all academic and research requirements and meet national standards for scientific degrees are eligible to submit their dissertation for defense. Upon successful defense, the corresponding academic degree is awarded in accordance with national regulations.
