With the increase in human life expectancy, the treatment of various cancers, degenerative diseases, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases has become increasingly important. Furthermore, due to globalization, convenient transportation, and frequent interactions between countries, new infectious diseases are frequently emerging, threatening the health of all humanity. Since the completion of the human genome sequencing and decoding, medical research has entered the era of genomic medicine. From the perspective of genomic medicine, disease is the result of the interaction between the patient's genome, the pathogen's genome, and the environment; the patient's own genetic characteristics determine part of the disease's outcome. In pharmacogenomics, different patients, different bacterial strains, or different viral strains often have different therapeutic effects or adverse reactions to the same drug or treatment. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of disease and drug resistance and their genetic variations from a genomic perspective, identifying target molecules for therapeutic treatment, and subsequently developing new methods for predicting disease progression, diagnostic reagents, and therapeutic drugs has become a new and important research avenue, and also a highly forward-looking and promising biotechnology industry. To study the extremely complex relationship between diseases and genes, it is necessary to collaborate with experienced clinicians, accurate patient records, abundant clinical materials, and outstanding basic medical research talents. This collaboration aims to integrate research and teaching faculty and resources, enhance the depth and standard of translational medicine research and teaching, and cultivate first-class translational medicine research and teaching talents.
Academia Sinica is a top-tier academic research institution in Taiwan, possessing the most outstanding basic research talent, the most advanced equipment, and the richest resources. National Yang-Ming University is a pioneer in the introduction and application of genomic innovation technologies and subsequent bioinformatics analysis of genomic data. Taipei Veterans General Hospital, National Yang-Ming University Hospital, and other teaching hospitals have ample and diverse clinical specimens and excellent clinicians. Integrating the strengths of these institutions will provide the most favorable conditions for research in translational medicine.
The Academia Sinica established the "Translational Medicine Doctoral Degree Program," offering appropriate scholarships to physicians and non-physicians who dedicate over 80% of their time to research. This collaboration has evolved into the current "Translational Medicine Doctoral Degree Program" jointly offered by Academia Sinica and various medical schools. Currently, many physician students in clinical medicine research institutes at universities across Taiwan still find their research time consumed by heavy clinical workloads. While the education process enriches their basic research skills and achieves its educational goals, and graduates play a role in raising the level of research in the medical field, they are still unable to focus on the most time-consuming, cutting-edge, and in-depth translational medicine research. To enhance the depth and standard of translational medicine research and teaching, and to cultivate top-tier leaders in translational medicine research and teaching, it is essential to further enhance the current collaboration by rigorously selecting physicians and general students with high research potential and enthusiasm, and whose objective circumstances allow them to dedicate over 80% of their time to research. This program provides substantial and comprehensive support, a first-class learning environment, and combines excellent clinical and basic research faculty to offer integrated interdisciplinary courses and solid integrative education and training, aiming to cultivate top-tier leaders in translational medicine research and teaching. National Yang-Ming University and Academia Sinica have jointly established a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program, enrolling doctoral students in translational medicine. Both institutions share educational roles, providing guidance, research resources, and related research equipment. Scholars from both institutions are jointly responsible for the design and implementation of the curriculum and supervise doctoral students in this program. With access to abundant resources and equipment, guidance from diverse experts, and close collaboration, this program offers young students a valuable integrative educational opportunity to cultivate their research interest in translational medicine and apply these fundamental life science findings to clinical diagnosis and treatment. This program plans to award a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.
Starting from the 2013-2014 academic year, this program is divided into the "Translational Medicine Group" and the "Stem Cell Medicine Group". The course of study is divided into the two groups, and students can choose their group freely after enrollment. This grouping is only for the course of study and not for academic status. Therefore, the name of the institution listed on the degree certificate will be "Translational Medicine Doctoral Degree Program".
