This program, designated by the Ministry of Education as the "Doctoral Degree Program in Translational Medicine, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University" (hereinafter referred to as this program), is jointly offered by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Academia Sinica under the "Agreement on Jointly Offering Translational Medicine Degree Programs between National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Academia Sinica," based on the principle of mutual benefit.
As human life expectancy increases, the treatment of various cancers, degenerative diseases, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases becomes increasingly important. Furthermore, with globalization enabling convenient transportation and increased international interaction, new infectious diseases are spreading frequently, threatening the health of all humanity. Since the completion of the human genome sequencing, medical research has entered the era of genomic medicine. From a genomic medicine perspective, disease is the result of interactions between the patient's genome, the pathogen's genome, and the environment; the patient's own genetic characteristics partially determine the disease's outcome. In pharmacogenomics, different patients, bacterial strains, or viral strains often experience varying responses to or adverse reactions to the same drug or treatment course. Therefore, a genomic approach to understanding the mechanisms of disease and drug resistance, as well as the genetic variations underlying them, can help identify effective target molecules and, subsequently, develop new disease prediction methods, diagnostic reagents, and therapeutic drugs. This has become a crucial new research avenue and represents a highly promising and promising biotech industry. To study the relationship between extremely complex diseases and genes, we need experienced clinicians, accurate patient medical records and rich clinical data, working together with outstanding basic medical research talents to integrate research and teaching faculty and resources, enhance the depth and level of translational medical research and teaching, and cultivate first-class translational medical research and teaching talents.
Academia Sinica is a leading academic research institution in Taiwan, boasting the finest basic research talent, state-of-the-art equipment, and the richest resources. National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University is a pioneer in the introduction and application of innovative genomic technologies and the subsequent bioinformatics analysis of genomic data. Taipei Veterans General Hospital, National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University Hospital, and other teaching hospitals offer a sufficient and diverse collection of clinical specimens and exceptional clinical physicians. Combining the strengths of these institutions will provide optimal conditions for research in translational medicine.
The Academia Sinica established a "PhD in Translational Medicine" program. If both physicians and non-physicians can devote more than 80% of their time to research, they will receive appropriate financial assistance. This collaboration has evolved into the current "PhD in Translational Medicine" program offered by the Academia Sinica in collaboration with various medical schools. Currently, many physician students in clinical medicine research institutes at universities across Taiwan still have their research time occupied by heavy clinical workloads. While this educational process strengthens basic research skills and achieves educational objectives, and after graduation, these students contribute to advancing research within the medical field, they are still unable to fully engage in the time-consuming, cutting-edge, and in-depth translational research. To elevate the depth and quality of translational medicine research and teaching, and to cultivate world-class leaders in translational medicine research and teaching, it is necessary to further enhance this collaboration and carefully select physicians and non-physicians with high research potential and enthusiasm, and whose environment allows them to devote more than 80% of their time to research. The program aims to provide practical and supportive learning, a first-class learning environment, and a comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum, combining outstanding clinical and basic research faculty. It also offers a solid, integrated education and training to cultivate leading leaders in translational medicine research and teaching. National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University and Academia Sinica have jointly established a doctoral program in translational medicine to recruit doctoral students. Both institutions will play a joint educational role, providing mentoring, research resources, and related research equipment. Scholars from both institutions will jointly design and implement the curriculum and supervise doctoral students in the program. With access to extensive resources and equipment, and close collaboration with a diverse group of experts, this program offers young students an excellent, integrated educational opportunity to cultivate their interest in translational medicine research and apply these basic life science discoveries to clinical diagnosis and treatment. The program aims to award a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.
