The Institute of Music evolved from the Music Department (majoring in Composition, Piano, or Percussion) established in 1992 by the Institute of Applied Arts at National Chiao Tung University. It became an independent Institute of Music in 2000. Since its inception, the Institute has maintained a creative spirit and has a unique role and status among higher education institutions in music in Taiwan. Currently, the Institute enrolls 20 master's students annually across the Musicology Department, the Music Composition Department (majoring in Composition, Electronic Music, and New Music Theatre), and the Performance Department (majoring in Piano, Strings, Percussion, and Wind Instruments).
After becoming an independent institute, the Institute expanded the instrumental offerings of the performance group and added a musicology group. In 2005, a music technology major was established. In 2008, the original music technology major was integrated into the interdisciplinary master's program led by the School of Engineering. Simultaneously, to meet the needs and demands of current performance and creative trends, the Institute added a multi-media new music major and an electronic music technology major. The Institute emphasizes the highly interactive nature of music creation, research, and performance: through the study of composition, theory, and musicology, students in the performance group become highly conscious performers; students in the creation and technology group become imaginative and reflective creators; and students in the musicology group become independent, culturally reflective, and experiential scholars. Electronic music technology and multimedia new music, on the other hand, utilize technological research as a means of communication, with a strong integration of music and technology, research, and creation as the core.
