Peru is one of the 12 countries considered megadiverse, which are home to 70% of the world's biodiversity. In our country there are around 25,000 species of plants, of which 30% are considered endemic. We are among the first places in terms of the number of plant species with known properties and used by the population (4,400 species). Regarding fauna, our country has 462 species of mammals; 1,815 of birds; 395 of reptiles; 408 amphibians; 2,000 fish and 4,000 butterflies. We also have an unimaginable number of species of lichens, insects, microorganisms, algae, sponges, macroscopic fungi, etc. that contain compounds that can be of great utility and economic importance for the country.


Despite having great marine and terrestrial natural resources, we have not been able to take advantage of the economic potential that they contain, among other things, because we have a shortage of qualified human resources to carry out research, development and innovation activities of our natural products.. Within the team necessary for the development of these activities, the role of the Chemist stands out, who, among his main activities, is dedicated to knowing and isolating the active ingredients, develops quality control protocols for natural products and their derivatives, and transforms them for its best use.


This is how this Master's Degree in Biodiversity Chemistry arises, whose central axis of training will be chemistry, with a fluid interaction with other disciplines such as biology, pharmacology, medicine; and with the business sector, export, biocommerce, regional governments, and national and international scientific research institutes in the area of ​​natural products.


Our master's degree has the professional support of professors/researchers from the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) and the Paul Sabatier University in France. The latter thanks to the fact that the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, through its Natural Products Research Unit, forms part of the International Joint Laboratory (LMI), which is a project financed by the IRD.
