To be of value, the Ph.D. coursework should complement the intended area of expertise to be developed. The candidate and the advisor should develop a coherent set of courses, the attainment of which would signal readiness for the Qualifying Examination, for review and approval by the advisory committee. The residency requirements represent a bare minimum of credits; ordinarily, the student will take more than eighteen (18) credits of coursework beyond the master’s degree. Remedial coursework assigned to make up deficiencies may not count toward residency. 2. Coursework At least one-half of the coursework presented for the Ph.D. degree shall be at the 600- and 700-level. Non-organized coursework (780 or 790) and coursework at the 400-level (4xx-G) may not be used to satisfy the minimum residency requirements. Since the Ph.D. subsumes a master’s degree, the list of courses for which a student is held responsible in the master’s degree also pertains to Ph.D. coursework (see The Masters Degrees, Course Requirements #2, Deficiencies.) The student need not repeat these courses if they or their equivalent have been taken with earlier studies. The student will be accountable for this material on the Qualifying Examination. This is more than a motto, it is a fact. Put simply, the raw materials upon which everything else is built, can only come from agriculture or mining. All of the conveniences of modern society which we now take for granted, computers, cars, bicycles, television sets, etc. all got their start when the silicon, iron and other minerals were extracted from the ground. Mining engineers work to discover, evaluate, recover and process mineral deposits from the earth and ocean floor. The majority are employed in either the design or supervision of mineral extraction and processing systems. They may also go into such related work as environmental control, safety, research or education. Some mining engineers, along with geochemists, geophysicists and geologists, work in mineral exploration; others work with metallurgical and other engineers to appraise new ore deposits. They study rock formations and water, soil and plant characteristics for signs of mineral or ore deposits. You will also want to check out the Norwood Student Chapter of the Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration, SME. SME is the professional society of the mining and minerals industry, and our students become members early in their academic careers. This professional society allows the students to begin building contacts with industry personnel, which enhances the learning process by informal and formal contact with those in industry who are practicing what the student learns in the classroom. This contact with the industry becomes invaluable in aiding the students understanding of classroom concepts as well as securing summer employment within the industry.
