The UK graduate program in philosophy aims to prepare students for successful careers as college and university researchers and teachers. We are a pluralistic department with broad competences in most areas of philosophy. The department has particular strengths in the history of philosophy from Plato to Kant, 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy, contemporary metaphysics and epistemology, philosophy of religion, and, ethical, social, and political philosophy. MISSION & VALUES The mission of the Department of Philosophy is to provide instruction to our graduate and undergraduate students comparable in quality to the best instruction they could receive anywhere in the country in the areas we cover and to provide an intellectual environment conducive to facilitating research and scholarship of the highest order. Career Opportunities Philosophy is the ultimate "transferable work skill." With its emphasis on reason and argumentation, philosophy is an excellent preparation for a career in law, religion, business, international diplomacy, social work, medical management or writing as well as post-graduate education.
