The general goal of graduate work in German is to provide students with a critical understanding of German culture, its language and literature and its relationship to western civilization as a whole. Specific courses are designed to acquaint students with the aims and methods of research in the fields of language pedagogy, literary and cultural history, literary theory, and historical linguistics. Students working as teaching assistants under faculty supervision have ample opportunity to develop effective teaching skills in a The Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offer a program of study leading to the degree of Masters of Arts in German Studies. The department offers an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to the field of German Studies from the Enlightenment and the age of Goethe to the present, including contemporary literature and film, literary theory, intellectual history, gender studies, and world language pedagogy. Concurrent degree programs are also available which combine, for example, a graduate degree in diplomacy or in library science with the M.A. in German Studies. We also have an exchange program with both the University of Heidelberg and the PH Ludwigsburg. A primary goal of our M.A. program is to combine an intellectually stimulating course of studies with a nurturing environment. To achieve this goal, the UK German program has instituted an innovative mentoring program for incoming teaching assistants. The KFLC: The Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Conference allow graduate students to be part of the oldest continuing foreign language conference in the United States.
