The reputation of the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Kentucky is based on the department's long, outstanding history and a tradition of exciting and innovative scholarship on the part of its faculty. The newly revised program in Hispanic Studies aims to prepare students for successful careers as scholars and teachers by providing them with a strong background in Spanish and Spanish American letters and a wide variety of other cultural forms that is supported by a strong critical foundation and informed by an emphasis on interdisciplinary. The connections of the Department of Hispanic Studies to the university's most prestigious and productive programs paired with an active faculty with wide-ranging interests and theoretical approaches allows us to offer an innovative curriculum and a wide range of courses. The department's strengths are reflected in current courses that approach the culture of the Hispanic world from the viewpoints of cultural and urban studies, border theory, feminist theory, psychoanalysis and post-structuralism poetics, just to name a few. Ph.D. candidates are strongly encouraged to take at least two courses outside of the department in a field of related interest All Hispanic Studies graduate students are members of the Hispanic Studies Graduate Student Association (HIGSA). The purpose of this organization is to address common professional concerns and promote unity amongst graduate students in order to facilitate their life in the department. HIGSA officers also serve on faculty and university-wide committees as representatives of the Hispanic Studies graduate students. HIGSA organizes a series of programmed events that serve the needs of students at all stages of their graduate career. Mentorship Program: This program connects new Hispanic Studies graduate students with peers who have several years of experience in the department. Its purpose is to address academic and personal concerns specific to Hispanic Studies graduate students in order to ease their transition to graduate studies at the University of Kentucky. The Mentorship Program serves as a supplement to resources available through other university services. Master's Reading List Club: The Master's Reading List is the foundation of the MA and PhD qualifying exams. In order to help students to prepare for these exams, HIGSA organizes a series of hour-long study sessions based upon the Master's Reading List. A professor from the department hosts these sessions by leading a discussion of major themes, historical events and critical debates that characterize his or her subfield. They are held throughout the academic year.
