Students at the UK School of Music enjoy hundreds of opportunities each year to perform in solo recitals, chamber groups and our more than 30 diverse instrumental and vocal ensembles. Our ensembles have performed at prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall and have enjoyed international tours to China, Italy, France, Spain and more. Our students have performed with renowned artists including Lang Lang, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell and more. Brass Trumpet Studio UK has a long history of excellence in trumpet. UK has twice hosted the International Trumpet Guild Conference, first in 1982 (Vince DiMartino, host) and again in 1998 (Terry Everson, host). The UK Trumpet Ensemble has taken first prize at the National Trumpet Competition (2004) (and second prize in 2016) and has also performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference (2009). UK graduate student Phillip Chase Hawkins was awarded first prize in the National Trumpet Competition's Graduate Solo Division in 2012. Dr. Jason Dovel, UK trumpet faculty, joined UK in 2013 after establishing a large, dynamic trumpet program in Oklahoma at Northeastern State University. Dovel's teaching and performing interests are quite broad. His creative activities range from playing Baroque trumpet and Renaissance cornetto to performing avant-garde contemporary music. In 2010, he toured nationally as a Baroque trumpet and cornetto soloist, and the following year, he presented a concert tour of music for trumpet and computer. In 2012, Dovel published the only anthology of music for trumpet and computer in the article, "A Guide to Literature for Trumpet with Electroacoustic Accompaniment" in the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Dovel encourages students' pursuits of all aspects of music and encourages them to seek a well-rounded musical education.
