Sustainable Urbanism MSc will equip you with the knowledge and practical tools to shape more sustainable, resilient and inclusive futures for urban environments and communities around the world. This degree explores the complex challenges of urbanism today, bringing together sustainable urban development theory and practice to advance the sustainability of our towns and cities.
You will learn about sustainable urbanism research themes, critically analysing the latest thinking and debates in sustainable development. You will explore urban case studies from around the world, examining the tensions and synergies between the institutional, environmental, social and economic goals of sustainability. This course takes a multidisciplinary approach. We draw on perspectives from urban planning, geography, ecology, urban design and sociology to offer a holistic understanding of sustainability in urban environments. Through hands-on project work, you will gain practical experience applying sustainable urbanism principles to plans, strategies and urban design proposals.
During your degree, you will:
- Think critically about possible sustainable futures and gain hands-on experience through project-based learning. You will apply sustainability models and concepts to an existing large-scale site, guiding the development of a sustainable long-term spatial strategy.
- Connect theory with practice through field trips, London site visits and project-based learning focused on real urban sustainability challenges.
- Pursue your own interests, choosing elective modules from across UCL or specialist urban planning modules.
- Undertake your own original research, writing a dissertation or research by design on a specialist topic of your choice.
- Gain a degree fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and partially accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). For more details, see the Accreditation section.
