The programme is housed in UCL’s Department of Geography – home to several leading international scholars in migration. It also draws on the expertise of academics across UCL, which has an international reputation in research on migration. It has two established research units: the Migration Research Unit and the Centre for Research on Economic Analysis of Migration. You will benefit from access to these research units and from a range of associated seminars and reading groups. UCL's migration research covers the globe with projects on migration from Mexico to China and from Senegal to Russia. The programme is also embedded in migration networks here in London, one of the world's most diverse cities.

Migration, Politics and Society is a friendly and supportive programme with excellent access to academics. All staff are available weekly for consultation in Academic Support and Feedback Hours. You will have the opportunity to work with academics on current research and in UCL campaigns and networks such as Refuge in A Moving World, which can connect you to a range of professional networks.

The programme is made up of a small, but international student body, which enables engaged debates in a trusting environment drawing on diverse experiences. The Migration Research Unit publishes students' dissertation research in the Working Papers series.

This academically rigorous MSc offers a critical and interdisciplinary exploration of Migration, Politics and Society, grounded in real-world policy debates and research. You will gain advanced analytical skills and methodological training, enabling you to investigate migration processes in both general and specialised contexts.

The course introduces key theoretical concepts and frameworks essential to understanding the politics, policies, and lived experiences of migration, while encouraging their application across diverse global settings. With an emphasis on both academic insight and real-world relevance, it prepares you to engage thoughtfully with the processes, poetics and politics of migration in a rapidly changing world.
