The course begins with a comprehensive introduction to the three core sub-disciplines of medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and pharmaceutics (the conversion of drug molecules into a medicine) in Year 1. You will also be introduced to the operating practices and principles of healthcare systems, and the drivers and constraints that govern the provision of medicines to patients, in addition to exploring some fundamental concepts in computer science, maths, and statistics.
In Year 2, you will further develop your skills and knowledge in the three core sub-disciplines, augmented with an introduction to drug use and effects in large populations. You will expand your computational skills into the realm of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Laboratory work forms a key component of Years 1 and 2, with practicals gathered together in “boot camps” to allow you to gain an immersive understanding of the scientific process.
In Year 3, in addition to advanced modules in pharmaceutics, pharmacology and medicinal chemistry bringing you up to date with the most cutting-edge medical interventions, you will explore key aspects of the translation of medicines from the bench to the clinic, gaining a detailed understanding of regulatory affairs, medicines manufacture and industrial perspectives. You will also undertake comprehensive research skills training and an individual advanced investigative project in your major area of interest
In Year 4, the bulk of the year is dedicated to an independent research project. Working closely with an academic mentor you will undertake cutting-edge research in a topic you select. You will work independently as part of a research team, developing publishable new knowledge in the pharmaceutical sciences. You will also select two optional modules, permitting you to further specialise in your core area of interest.
