Delivered jointly by two world-leading research faculties, the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) and UCL Engineering, this flexible multidisciplinary Master’s allows you to enhance your career by acquiring 21st capabilities.
The course is one of very few courses in the world that assists students to supplement their first degree domain knowledge, for example, in architecture, engineering, finance, or project management with social science expertise. It therefore will enable you to gain an interdisciplinary perspective on, and interdisciplinary expertise to, work more effectively in whatever form of employment you subsequently pursue or enhance your ability to train adaptable, critically engaged engineers.
Unlike traditional Master’s degrees, this course instead helps you develop a research-informed approach to issues that are reshaping how we think about engineering and professional practice, education and policy. You’ll absorb the latest insights on topics like the role (and limitations) of generative AI in the workplace or classroom, leadership, sustainable development, or globalised working practices that require us to work effectively across time zones, culture barriers, and digitally mediated contexts.
As part of the UCL Centre for Engineering Education, you’ll learn about project-based and scenario-based learning, finding new ways to achieve project outcomes by asking better questions as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team. You will also, as part of your module, have an opportunity to observe the Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) in action.
At the same time, you’ll work with IOE’s Department of Education, Practice and Society, to explore how social science concepts and approaches can be integrated with your technical skills to help you think more critically. Combining technical skills with social sciences in this way allows you to work towards better outcomes that meet our rapidly evolving social, cultural, economic and environmental needs.
You’ll be able to choose optional modules to match your career goals from IOE, UCL Engineering or elsewhere in UCL, and choose topics you want to be assessed on in your final project that tackle real world challenges.
Flexible routes are also available leading to a Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma which can be topped up in time to an MSc and will suit working professionals.
