How do we guide effective learning and teaching in young children from all backgrounds and environments, in a way that helps us bring about social justice and fairer outcomes?
On this course, you’ll attempt to find your own answers to questions like this, while learning how to help primary educators and schools secure the future of learning during rapid social and technological change. You’ll question the foundations of learning, and how our first learning experiences set the patterns of learning for our adult lives.
In line with the UCL Institute of Education’s holistic approach to education across both formal and informal learning settings, you’ll look at how children learn in their wider social context. You’ll study theoretical models that examine how we learn in school, at home, in public and online (and the way children benefit when we celebrate and actively build on their informal learning achievements).
Our curriculum is designed to train globally-minded educators who can critically evaluate education across different cultures and contexts, rather than assuming one model fits all.
We’re assisted in this by a diverse cohort of critically engaged practitioners from all over the world. Through comparative analysis of different local and international contexts, you’ll work together to reflect deeply on your cultural preconceptions, and how they influence your understanding of educational policy and practice.
Here at the UCL Department of Learning and Leadership, you’ll work with and alongside experts who combine lived experience as classroom practitioners with decades at the forefront of transformative international research into primary education.
You’ll learn directly from the researchers behind such projects as the Effective Pre-School, Primary and Secondary Education (EPPSE) project – the first major longitudinal study of its kind in the UK, which led to the free provision of high-quality pre-schooling for all British children.
This course develops globally-minded educators who can critically evaluate education across different cultures and contexts, rather than assuming one model fits all.
