The Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) BSc takes a distinctive and alternative approach to architectural education. Unlike traditional architecture degrees with a fixed curriculum, this course brings together architecture with the opportunity to receive specialised teaching in other subjects such as archaeology, art history, economics, planning, education, geography, management, and politics. This mix gives you the freedom to develop your own creative and critical approach to architecture and to build a unique interdisciplinary skillset that is profoundly relevant to the built environment today.

You take optional modules at the Bartlett School of Architecture taught by designers, urban researchers, architects, filmmakers, historians, artists and green policy specialists who work across the built environment. Taking our own modules builds your understanding of architectural research, sustainable cities, creative practice, and alternative modalities of design. Students are also able to build strong architectural expertise through selected modules shared with several of our accredited programmes: in the professional practice, technology and history and theory of architecture, and in planning and real estate topics.

You then choose optional modules from across UCL, giving you the flexibility to shape your studies around your interests and career aspirations both within and outside the built environment. Over more than one department, you might want to explore how cities develop, spatial justice or climate change. You may want to study film making or learn about programming, public art, artificial intelligence or urban policy making. If you want to build extra skills, modules in areas like creative writing, marketing, management or languages are available.

We also offer a study abroad option, giving you the chance to spend a whole year immersed in another university and city with global destinations including Montreal, Melbourne, Tokyo, Umea, Hong Kong and Vienna.
