The School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS) at UCL provides a rich research environment for students of Italian Studies within an interdisciplinary context. You will be able to draw on expertise from across the university, in particular from the faculties of Arts & Humanities and Social & Historical Sciences, and the Centre for Multidisciplinary and Intercultural Inquiry (CMII).
Expertise cover periods from the medieval to the contemporary, with specific strengths in: Dante, medieval literature, renaissance culture with special focus on theatre and women’s writing, romanticism, the political and cultural history of modern Italy, language study and generative linguistics, twentieth-century literature, avant-gardes, fascism, mafia, contemporary literature, cinema and graphic novels, ecocriticism and critical theory.
Before submitting an application, you must first identify and contact potential supervisors. Each PhD student is supported by both a primary and a secondary supervisor throughout their studies.
Training courses are designed on an individual basis by the student’s supervisor and generally involve participation in activities offered by the department of the primary supervisor. You will participate in a mandatory CMII skills seminar programme and attend departmental seminar sessions which may be subject specific or interdisciplinary.
Regular research seminars are also run by individual PhD courses and research centres, such as gender and sexuality studies, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American studies, health humanities, French and Francophone studies, translation studies, film studies and comparative literature. All students are welcome to attend relevant sessions, offering opportunities for cross-fertilisation of ideas.
