This PhD will let you hone your expertise, create real research impact, and develop professional skills in all areas of crime and security science.
Established in 2001, the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science is recognised worldwide for its track record of close collaboration with practitioners and agencies through knowledge transfer and exchange activities. Working as part of an interdisciplinary research environment of leading academics and expert practitioners, you’ll help bring about systemic change in crime prevention and security practice.
The department hosts the UCL Security Science Doctoral Research Training Centre (UCL SECReT), an international centre for PhD training in security and crime science, where you can complete their doctoral studies in three years. You’ll work across five Research Centres of excellence, whose collective contributions to the field of crime and security science research were assessed as ‘world-leading’ by the Research Excellence Framework (2021 REF) for 87.5% of our submissions and 12.5% as ‘internationally excellent’.
With specialisms such as crime mapping, cybercrime, human trafficking, technological solutions, and counter-extremism, you’ll contribute to the vital work of our research groups, making the most of the department’s unique multidisciplinary profile and its strategic position within the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences. This broad approach combines expertise in science and engineering with social sciences to make data-driven connections between people, processes, technologies and policies.
