Sociology and Data Science MSc offers a comprehensive approach to understanding social phenomena, combining sociological frameworks with data science methods. Students take core modules that develop their understanding of social theory and sociological explanation, while exploring contemporary social issues and global perspectives through topics including globalisation, migration, civil rights and social movements.
Students also select from data science options that introduce essential methods for data analysis, including for geo-spatial, big, and longitudinal data, and offer cutting-edge techniques for digital data extraction, online surveys, and experiments, using open-source tools such as R.
Putting the module learning into practice, the dissertation project trains students to become independent researchers by completing a project on a topic of their choosing, demonstrating their application of data science approaches to a contemporary issue. Graduates of this course leave with a distinctive blend of theoretical knowledge and technical skills, well-prepared for careers in research, public policy, and data analysis.
