The Department of French Language and Literature was initially established as a division under the Department of Western Languages and Literatures during the 2009–2010 academic year. As of November 1, 2009, faculty members were appointed to the Department of French Language and Literature along with the departments of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Turkish Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, and English Language and Literature. In the 2009–2010 academic year, our department began formal education with a preparatory class by admitting 11 students through additional quotas to the undergraduate program in French Language and Literature. In 2012, by decision of the Higher Education Council, the department gained independent status as the Department of French Language and Literature. The department, which graduated its first students in 2014, currently has 366 enrolled students. The duration of study in our department is five years, including a one-year preparatory class. The primary mission of the department is to educate free-thinking, entrepreneurial, creative, and open-minded individuals who are guided by scientific thought and inspired by universal values—individuals who are responsible toward their country and humanity and possess a high level of competence. In addition, the department aims to help students comprehend the place of French literature and culture within the broader context of Western literatures and cultures. It strives to train individuals who have an excellent command of written and spoken French, who are well-acquainted with Western literatures and cultures, and who are also able to communicate effectively—both orally and in writing—in a second foreign language of their choice, such as English, German, or Japanese. Graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to work in both the public and private sectors, including in publishing, media, and, when needed, tourism. They are also capable of guiding French-speaking visitors and teaching Turkish to foreigners. With its accumulated scientific knowledge and experience, the department aims to become a leading academic unit that enjoys national and international prestige. It aspires to contribute not only to the scientific community through the knowledge it produces and the broad perspectives it provides throughout the education process, but also to the development of the country. Departmental Goals Our primary goal is to provide high-quality academic training that equips students to be competent and qualified in both national and international professional fields. We aim to contribute to the development of our country and to the promotion of our history and culture abroad by offering professional education of the highest standards. We also seek to develop joint educational programs through cooperation with national and international institutions, and to elevate our department to higher levels in academic and scientific platforms. Our mission is to nurture individuals who, under the guidance of science and in light of contemporary and universal values, are socially responsible, free-thinking, original, and open-minded. These individuals will be able to make effective use of modern information and technologies and take advantage of their foreign language and intercultural competencies to represent their country and safeguard its interests on a global scale. The department strives to reach and apply a level of knowledge that is contemporary, scientific, and critical. It is committed to producing new scientific and technological methods and information for the advancement of thought, science, and intercultural exchange, and to using this knowledge to educate and enlighten society. It also aims to create a free and productive research environment for young scholars and, through national and international collaborative efforts, to help society learn and use a foreign language and its cultural products. As a university that is determinedly advancing toward becoming a globally recognized institution through the ERASMUS and Bologna processes—and that places a strong emphasis on language preparatory programs and foreign language departments—we aim to provide high-quality undergraduate and graduate education in both scientific and professional contexts. With its on-campus housing and social facilities, the university offers a safe and comfortable educational environment for its students. Through scientific congresses, symposia, and promotional activities, we aim to expand and promote the cultural tourism potential of the city of Tekirdağ, while also increasing the visibility and recognition of our university. In addition, we aim to enhance the productivity and efficiency of our university, establish a strong institutional identity, and transform it into a recognized brand in education, research, and community service. To support the healthy development of our university, we intend to organize and participate in promotional and academic events, especially at the international level. Finally, through student clubs and various events held at the university’s social facilities, we aim to support students’ personal development and increase their sense of social awareness and responsibility.

Admission Requirements

1+
Applicants who wish to enroll in the Department of French Language and Literature at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University are expected to demonstrate both academic readiness and a genuine interest in French language, literature, and culture. In addition to meeting the general university admission requirements, prospective students should fulfill the following criteria: A strong background in literature and language studies at the secondary school level is highly recommended. While prior knowledge of French is not mandatory, it is considered an asset and may provide an advantage in the initial stages of the program. Students without prior French language education are encouraged to participate in the university’s one-year preparatory language program, which is mandatory for students who do not pass the French proficiency exam upon enrollment. Candidates are also expected to possess solid skills in critical thinking, reading comprehension, and written expression in their native language. An interest in comparative literature, European cultural history, and linguistic analysis will also benefit applicants during their studies. Applicants who have completed secondary education outside of Turkey must provide certified transcripts and an equivalency certificate recognized by the Turkish Ministry of Education. In addition, international applicants are required to present proof of a recognized foreign language exam (such as DELF/DALF, if applicable), and may be asked to participate in an online or in-person interview. Students are encouraged to demonstrate extracurricular involvement related to language, literature, or cultural studies—such as participation in literary clubs, language courses, translation workshops, or international exchange programs—as these experiences reflect a motivation aligned with the department’s academic goals. Upon admission, students will benefit from an interdisciplinary curriculum that not only focuses on French language, literature, and culture but also includes components of comparative Western literatures and elective courses in other foreign languages such as English, German, or Japanese. Graduates are expected to have a high level of written and spoken proficiency in French, along with basic communication skills in a second foreign language. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in translation, education, cultural institutions, media, and international relations. Students are also provided with the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus+ exchange program, and are encouraged to pursue part of their studies abroad at partner universities. Motivated candidates with a vision for academic growth, cultural engagement, and professional development in international contexts are highly encouraged to apply.
