The aim of our department, which started teaching in the 2011-2012 academic year, is to establish a scientific bridge between German and Turkish culture. To this end, studies are conducted by examining and analyzing classical and contemporary works reflecting German culture, and written works from the beginning of German literature to the present are researched. In addition, the stages that the German language has gone through over the centuries are taught with linguistic methods.  A connection is established with cultural history in order to explain how the German language has progressed in its historical development. Since the interpretation of this connection together with the current realities of the world falls within the subject area of literature, it is thought that understanding the works that continue to exist in the digital environment and the audiences they address will also make great contributions to our graduates in the coming years. New students enrolled in our department take a German proficiency exam at the beginning of the academic year. Students who fail the proficiency exam take German preparatory classes for 24 weeks per week, a total of 720 hours, for an academic year (15+15=30 weeks). The preparatory course in question is provided by the School of Foreign Languages. Students who successfully complete the preparatory class begin their four-year undergraduate education in our department.
In addition, during the 4-year undergraduate education, students of the Department receive 40 credits of B1+ level English/French education, and one or two of the following languages: French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, English and Italian at A1+ level. In addition, they also receive 16 credits of multi-language compulsory elective courses, including specialization areas, tourism and scientific research and crop courses that can be followed in either German or English.
