Museums play an important role in society. As defined by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), a museum is a permanent, non-profit institution at the service of society and its development, open to the public, which collects, preserves, investigates, disseminates and exhibits heritage material and immaterial of humanity for the purposes of study, education and recreation. In the Dominican Republic there are currently more than 50 museums, state and private, that represent the cultural and natural heritage, material and intangible. They deal with various areas of knowledge, such as: art, natural history, archeology, anthropology, history, and technology. Currently there is a need to train professionals with the knowledge and skills that allow them to organize, manage and direct museums. It is for this reason that the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University offers this Master in Museum Studies.
