Chemical Engineers turn new advances in chemistry, materials science, and biology into large scale practical realities in the everyday world. They are in the forefront in many areas of current technology, including genetic engineering, the development of artificial organs, the creation of alternate sources of power, protection of the environment, and the development of superconducting materials. Chemical Engineers ensure the efficient operation of industrial plants and create new Chemical processes in a continual effort to get the most from our limited supply of natural resources. Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the physical, chemical, and biological transformations of matter. We use these transformations to make useful products for our society. It is distinguished from other disciplines by its focus on chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular level phenomena. It is incredibly diverse and dynamic. In short, Chemical engineers develop new products, design more effective processes, recover valuable raw materials and protect the environment and our health. Typical career paths: The study of engineering fosters the development of quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills which are very useful in many different career areas. On average, 70% to 80% of graduates with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree choose employment in private industry, government laboratories and agencies, and nonprofit research centers. Approximately 20% to 25% of the chemical engineering graduates will choose to continue their education toward a Ph.D., and a few graduates will choose to attend medical, law, or business schools. Students who earn advanced degrees in engineering usually pursue a career in advanced research or as a faculty member in a college of engineering.
