The Psychology Education major certifies graduates to teach social studies at the secondary level in the state of Delaware. Students complete the psychology major and take a variety of courses in the social sciences, as well as core courses in the Department of Education. Psychology Education student complete one-semester of student teaching during the spring of the senior year. Psychology Education majors often minor in History, because as social studies teachers they often teach history and government courses as well as psychology courses. Psychology education involves a firm grounding in the scientific discipline of psychology combined with training in the principles and practices of education. The department provides majors with an understanding of the principles of behavior, of the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles, and of appropriate ways in which to apply such knowledge. Students may elect to major in psychology or psychology education. Psychology education majors take a core of education courses in addition to student teaching in the senior year. Students are equipped to teach psychology in secondary education. Career paths: The study of psychology is relevant to a wide range of occupations. As a liberal arts degree, psychology teaches critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills that are applicable to management jobs, community work, and educational settings. In addition, many of our graduates pursue graduate education in the helping professions (including counseling psychology, school psychology, and social work). Our alumni have also been very successful at gaining admission to Ph.D. programs, where they train to pursue research careers.
