Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Psychologists may be involved in basic research aimed at understanding principles of cognition, emotion, motivation, sensation, perception, and social interactions. Psychologists also may apply these principles to understanding and intervening in social problems. Psychology majors take courses in four major areas. Neuroscience concerns the structure and function of the brain and its relation to behavior. Clinical psychology concerns the description and explanation of maladaptive processes in humans and the design and assessment of interventions for those processes. Cognitive psychology studies how humans store and process information and perform mental operations such as memory, attention, perception, and learning. Social psychology concerns the study of human attitudes and actions in social settings, including the family, workplace, schools and neighborhoods. Career paths: The study of psychology is relevant to a wide range of occupations. As a liberal arts degree, psychology teaches critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills that are applicable to management jobs, community work, and educational settings. In addition, many of our graduates pursue graduate education in the helping professions (including counseling psychology, school psychology, and social work). Our alumni have also been very successful at gaining admission to Ph.D. programs, where they train to pursue research careers.
