Art history combines historical analysis with a special concern for artistic expression. Every society has recorded its history in art and architecture. By developing the ability to interpret social and cultural history through a study of works of art, art historians contribute a unique perspective to the central issues of civilization, issues that define the core of a comprehensive liberal arts education. The overall emphasis of the major is on developing and refining the intellectual skills associated with critical analysis, historical awareness, and aesthetic sensitivity, though students are not expected to make art they. Coupled with that is a desire to offer research opportunities and practical experience in areas such as museum work and art history education to allow students to test and apply the knowledge and values they are acquiring. Career paths: The Department of Art History provides its majors with a first-rate, broad-based liberal arts education with a special emphasis on visual acuity; our graduates go on to business, law and medical school, as well as to a wide range of careers. Many of our students want to pursue career paths in areas related to art history. Museums large and small are playing an increasingly prominent role in the lives of communities. Art historians with advanced degrees are at the center of this growing excitement, serving as senior administrators and curators. For graduates with a bachelor’s degree, professional and staff positions are available in museum education, development, and public relations, in state and local arts councils, as well as in galleries and auction houses. The conservation of art, architecture, and historic sites has emerged as a widespread, influential public concern; often it has been art historians who have spearheaded efforts to preserve our cultural heritage and to extend the public legacy of the arts. Students with a commitment to research and teaching are encouraged to pursue graduate studies in art history, for which Delaware’s undergraduate curriculum provides excellent preparation.
