This program enables undergraduates to pursue the study of film criticism, history, and theory in addition to the study of literature. The program provides students with the tools of critical film analysis, a knowledge of the major trends in film history, an opportunity to study recognized film classics from various countries, and an introduction to influential theoretical and critical writing in the discipline. The University holdings in film scholarship and feature films have recently been expanded. The presence of an active film culture on campus is exemplified by the series of popular American films on Friday and Saturday evenings, the international film series on Sunday evenings, and frequent campus visits by filmmakers, critics, and scholars. Career paths: A degree in English opens the door to a broad range of career possibilities. Job opportunities exist in book and magazine publishing, journalism, technical writing, computer documentation, corporate communications, advertising, teaching, and public relations. Because English majors learn to speak and write clearly, as well as to analyze textual problems and create effective arguments, their skills are also valued by employers in virtually every aspect of business, including sales, marketing, human resources, and finance. Many English majors from the University go on to pursue advanced degrees in law, business, library science, journalism, literature, and medicine.
