The study of foreign languages makes possible communication among peoples of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and fosters intercultural understanding. Since language is the primary means by which cultural perspectives are expressed and social interactions are shared, students of foreign languages and literatures are able to develop cultural insights, linguistic and literary sensitivity, and an awareness of other peoples’ world views that are not available in any other way. Through knowledge of another linguistic system and appreciation of the interdependence of language and culture, speakers of foreign languages are also able to view their native language and culture objectively and to allow that understanding to inform their communication with people from other cultures. Career Paths: The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Language mastery has become an important credential for leadership today. Multinational corporations, engineering and advertising firms want skilled professionals able to interact with colleagues from around the globe; who can bring a multicultural perspective to issues of international scope; who have the expertise required for successful international negotiation. Journalists, artists, and media professionals all need to comprehend the subtleties of different cultural perspectives, in order to serve effectively as interpreters of the international world we inhabit.
