Study Level

Masters

The course is primarily concerned with experimental and theoretical studies of the physics of fluid flows and liquid crystals; (the properties of isotropic and anisotropic fluids); the length scales range from the microscopic, where the focus is on self-assembly and order, to macroscopic nonlinear effects such as chaos, turbulence and pattern formation. A research project is undertaken under the supervision of a staff member throughout the year together with lectures. Full time is spent working on the project unless attending lectures. A dissertation will be submitted at the year-end. The research of the Nonlinear Physics group is concerned with turbulence in fluid flows, pattern formation in complex materials such as granular flows and instabilities in elastic solids. The focus of our research is on carefully controlled experiments allied  with Mathematics. The group forms the experimental part of the Manchester Centre for  Nonlinear Dynamics.
