The BSc Microbiology course involves the study of microorganisms with emphasize on the biology of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoan parasites. Microbiologists are needed to do the research required for the future battle against infectious diseases worldwide, understanding the environmental importance of microbes and to exploit them for food production, biotechnological and industrial applications. This course focuses on the pathogenic potential of the organisms that cause disease in man. Students will also cover aspects of the biochemistry, physiology and genetics of microorganisms. Students will spend their first year learning fundamental concepts before specialising in microbiology topics in their second and final year. In Year 3, students may go for a placement with one of Manchester’s `trusted partner' organisations in the UK or abroad.  Alternatively, students can choose to arrange their own placement (subject to approval from the School of Biological Sciences).
