This PhD project aims to develop a novel system for Cognitive Monitoring of Human Operators by leveraging advanced AI and utilizing multi-modal data sources such as cameras, control inputs, response timing and various other sensors.
The goal is to monitor and assess the cognitive states and attention levels of operators in real-time, using statistical and AI techniques to process and analyse data from these diverse inputs.
A thorough review of existing cognitive monitoring methodologies and AI applications will provide a foundation for this work. Following this, the project will focus on experimenting with the integration of multi-modal data sources to create an AI-driven system capable of continuously tracking and analysing operator attention. This system will detect signs of cognitive fatigue, attention lapses, low-magnitude deviations and other mental states that can negatively impact performance.
The applications of this research span multiple industries, including transportation, industrial operations and safety-critical environments where maintaining high levels of attention is essential. The project will culminate in the development of a comprehensive monitoring tool, contributing to improvements in operator performance, safety and overall system reliability.
The Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University is committed to advancing research at the forefront of technological innovation, with a particular emphasis on emerging technologies that can facilitate transportation development. Dr Miguel Martínez, with expertise in the field of AI for engineering and over sixty publications in the field, will provide guidance throughout the duration of the project . Loughborough University stands as a beacon of research excellence, with a distinguished track record highlighted by its recent recognition in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, where 94% of submitted work was rated as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent.' Join us in shaping the future of engineering design through the transformative potential of AI.
