Developing Natural Surfactants from Biomass for Industrial Applications PhD
The Department of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join our team in exploring the extraction and development of natural surfactants from biomass for use in various industries, particularly cosmetics.
As industries increasingly seek sustainable alternatives to synthetic ingredients, natural surfactants are becoming essential for applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, and agriculture, thanks to their eco-friendly, biodegradable, and skin-compatible properties.
This PhD project will focus on developing efficient extraction methods for natural surfactants from biomass, such as plants and microbial sources, to meet industrial needs. Using environmentally sound extraction techniques like solvent extraction, microbial fermentation, and aqueous extraction, the project will evaluate the surfactant properties of various natural extracts, including their emulsifying, foaming, and stabilizing capabilities.
Working alongside your supervisor, who is actively engaged in research on natural ingredients for cosmetic applications, you will have the opportunity to contribute directly to the development of eco-friendly ingredients for the growing green cosmetics sector.
