Developing Prescription Guidelines for Passive Heat Therapy PhD

Passive heating, for example via hot water immersion or Sauna use, is emerging as a therapy approach beneficial to cardiovascular health. As is the case for exercise interventions, regular exposure is critical for sustained health benefits. However, there are currently no guidelines to outline optimal exposure frequency, intensity and duration. Similarly, the importance of the subjective experience remains underexplored, for example, the pleasant vs unpleasant experiences that impact on a person’s willingness to adhere regularly. This project aims to explore currently existing evidence on the minimal heat exposure stimulus required for health benefits. This will form the basis for heat therapy guidelines. Experimental data will also be collected to gain further insight into effective and pleasant heat therapy approaches.

Loughborough University has an applied research culture. In REF 2021, 94% of the work submitted was judged to be top-rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. We are a community based on mutual support and collaboration. Through our Doctoral College there are continual opportunities for building important research skills and networks among your peers and research academics.

The project will be supervised by Dr Christof Leicht in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.
