Our PGCE Mathematics programme prepares you to teach the 11-18 age range and is offered as a full-time, one-year programme. It provides practical professional preparation for teaching in secondary schools and is designed and delivered in partnership with schools in up to ten local authorities.
Upon successful completion of the PGCE, you will be qualified to teach children aged 11-18. The programme also offers 90 credits towards an MSc Education degree with a clear pathway to complete your master's within two years of teaching*.
At the heart of the PGCE is the development of your teaching competences. The course lasts 36 weeks and two thirds of it will be spent gaining teaching experience in two different secondary schools where you will have the support and guidance of experienced teachers. For the rest of the time, you will work at Loughborough with tutors and teachers who will prepare you for your school experience and guide you in making the important links between the theoretical and practical components of the course.

A 2:2 honours degree awarded by a UK higher education provider (or a recognised equivalent qualification), which has at least 50% mathematics. If the degree has less mathematics content, then a subject knowledge enhancement course may be required before the start of the PGCE.
In accordance with current government requirements, all applicants must be interviewed before a place can be offered in order to assess their suitability for teaching. It is normally expected that candidates should have had at least three full days’ experience in a state secondary school before applying for any programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status. Recent experience of working with young people will also be valuable experience, although this is not a necessary requirement.
