Speech pathologists work with people with communication and swallowing disabilities. They may help young children with developmental speech and language difficulties; provide specialist support to school-aged children and adolescents with language, learning and reading difficulties; work on rehabilitation programs for adults with a brain injury; support those with autism, cleft palate or dementia; or optimise vocal skills.

Admission Requirements

The minimum admission requirements for the Master of Speech and Language Pathology are as follows:   AQF Level 7 bachelor's qualification (or recognised equivalent) with a WAM of 65; and
  • Recent successful completion of units of study in at least five of the following topical areas: Phonetics, Phonology, Grammar/Syntax, Psycholinguistics, Semantics, Morphology, Language Development, Psychology; and
  • Satisfactory personal statement detailing your understanding of speech pathology as it is practised in Australia, your reasons for desiring to work as a speech pathologist, and any other factors relevant to your application.   
OR   AQF Level 7 bachelor's qualification (or recognised equivalent) with a WAM of 65; and
  • Relevant professional work experience in Australia (totaling two years FTE) within the past five years; and
  • Satisfactory Casper score; and
  • Satisfactory personal statement detailing your understanding of speech pathology as it is practised in Australia, your reasons for desiring to work as a speech pathologist, the relevance of your previous professional work experience, and any other factors relevant to your application. 
Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Offers are made on a competitive basis. Places in the course are limited. Offers cannot be deferred and applicants who choose not to take up an offer must re-apply in future admission rounds.
For applicants required to take a Casper test, upon receiving your application, the University will advise of the available dates and process for this test. Casper test availability will be specifically for Macquarie University applicants.
