For more than 65,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have sustained knowledge systems through language, culture and land-based learning. Too often, however, formal schooling is framed only within colonial ways of thinking. Indigenous education as a discipline explores how educators and policymakers can support the centring of Indigenous sovereignty and community authority, revitalise languages, address intergenerational trauma and challenge institutional racism.

The Indigenous Education specialisation will equip you with the knowledge and skills to foster better futures for Indigenous peoples, grounded in a critical understanding of the historical, contemporary and global challenges they face. Through Indigenous-led scholarship and dedicated communities of practice, you’ll engage with the histories and impacts of colonisation while examining how knowledge, culture and language continue to shape learning. Whether you’re a teacher, policy adviser or leader, you’ll gain the capabilities to contribute to transformative change – or build toward a research career via our Master of Research.
