Public history and heritage is concerned with how history is remembered, represented and debated outside traditional academic settings. It critically examines who controls historical narratives and how the past is commemorated in public memory, cultural heritage, oral histories, museums and digital storytelling. It asks vital questions about the purpose of history and the ethics of how it’s communicated across different cultures and political settings around the world.

In the Public History and Heritage major, you’ll integrate theory with hands-on practice to design and deliver public-facing history projects while honing your skills in curation, storytelling and interpretation. You’ll engage with memory studies, curatorial practice, digital humanities and archival research while critically reflecting on issues of authority, inclusion and cultural sensitivity. Having acquired comprehensive research, storytelling, communication and project management skills, you’ll graduate equipped for a career in museums, heritage management, education, archives, tourism, media and public policy, or for further study in the humanities.
