The department  , established in 1971, is the first spatial planning department in Taiwan and a recognized institute of excellence in teaching, research, and industry-academia cooperation. Our core goal is to promote environmental quality, competitiveness, fairness, and justice to guide the sustainable development of communities, urban and rural areas, regions, and nations. The department offers BS, MSc, and PhD programs in spatial planning. We aim to cultivate students proficient in planning and design theories and practical methodologies to become ambitious, professional, creative, scientific, and with worldwide vision elite spatial planners. Therefore, our curriculum design emphasizes both theoretical and practical training. Based on the emerging planning issues and faculty members' expertise, our teaching and research fields focus on urban and regional planning, urban design and regeneration, regional economics and industrial development, urban engineering and transportation, and information technology application. We attract the best students interested in spatial planning and design to study at NCKU. Our graduates are highly employable and outstanding qualified in their specialized areas. Many private or public sector leaders are our alumni and their professional achievements have contributed to the progress of the spatial planning system and the well-being of our country.

Applicants are required to provide their college and graduate transcripts, a copy of their Master's degree thesis, and the other relevant academic publications. Applicants from English-speaking countries, such as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa or the United States of America, or those who had studied and obtained college or graduate degrees in these countries can provide the certified documents or diploma instead of the English proficiency certificates. Selected courses taught entirely in English are offered in 27 departments. It has 43 undergraduate programmes, 36 independent graduate institutes and nine degree programmes.
