About Teesside University

Teesside University is an enterprising and global university, committed to transforming lives and economies through education – powered by research and innovation and enriched by industry through our engagement with businesses.

We deliver excellence across teaching and the student experience, translational research, and business engagement. Working in partnership with industry and the professions, the University applies knowledge that delivers economic, cultural and social impact across the communities we serve. From developing outstanding degree apprenticeships tailored to industry to addressing societal issues on a global scale, our work is purpose driven, and impactful. We value education and research which is innovative, creative and supports the development of solutions to shared global challenges.

With over 22,600 students on campus, with around 4 in 10 international and over 150k alumni across 120 countries, we foster a diverse global student and graduate community. Through our extensive partner network overseas we have over 1200 students studying abroad, and with over 2,500 online learners, we continue to adapt our provision to respond to enhancements in technology and the evolving needs of our students.

Our commitment to our students is demonstrated through our cutting-edge campus, at the heart of the Tees Valley, featuring award-winning student service facilities and innovative and inspiring teaching spaces, like BIOS, our new £36.9m health and life sciences building opened in 2023, enabling interactive learning and high-tech laboratories.

Teesside University was awarded an overall rating of Gold across all three areas in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023 and was ranked 23rd out of 131 UK Universities for Teaching Quality in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

A new Digital Life facility is in development, due to open in 2025, building upon our reputation for digital excellence. As the first Higher Education Institution to become an Adobe Creative Campus, we have leveraged our digital partnerships to enable our students to become digitally enabled as part of our renowned Future-Facing Learning approach. We are an Apple Distinguished School and offer all students free access to devices and applications to develop their skills.

The student experience lies at the heart of our mission to transform lives and is endorsed regularly by our own students through strong results both in the UK National Student Survey; and the International Student Barometer, in which Teesside University has held a UK number 1 position for seven consecutive years.

As an anchor institution, the University continues to deliver on the region’s priorities, as an influential voice for the region, a catalyst for social mobility and a magnet for global investment.

We are globally connected through our campus and office network, multinational study partners, and industry that spans across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Recently launched is Teesside University’s new London campus based at Here East on the former Olympic Park in East London. With an initial focus on digital technologies and enterprise, Teesside University London is capitalising on existing strengths in animation and games design, directly linking the thriving digital cluster of Middlesbrough with businesses based in London, to offer new opportunities across the student experience.

Working with our international partners, we’re tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Our growing expertise and reputation for research in Net Zero, Health & Wellbeing, and People & Place, was recognised in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, with the majority of our research judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent; and most recently we were recognised as one of the most engaged Universities in England in the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF3) – we are one of only a few universities in the UK to hold the Customer First standard.

Our cutting-edge research facilities and national centres of excellence, including our £22.3m National Horizons Centre opened in 2019 to address the needs of the emerging bio-based industries now drives research and enterprise activity in biosciences through a network of key industry collaborative projects. Our £13.1m Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre was launched in 2023 and positions the Tees Valley at the heart of the green industrial revolution.

Through our mission, we achieve excellence across all areas, transforming lives and economies for the students, partners, and communities we serve.
