Designed to provide continued professional development to experienced teachers, the elementary education specialization is intended for individuals who wish to extend their understanding of teaching-learning processes and the situational contexts in which they occur. This specialization offers opportunity for the in-depth study of current theory, research, and practice, particularly related to the design and delivery of effective instruction in the primary and upper elementary or middle school grades. While built around a common College Core, degree requirements are sufficiently flexible to allow for individual needs and interests. For example, students may use elective credits to expand their knowledge of one or more academic disciplines in the elementary curriculum; investigate new teaching methods and technologies; explore the educational needs of a particular age range or group of learners; or expand their understanding of the cognitive, affective, social, cultural, and motivational dimensions of learning. Students also may develop further skills to assume greater leadership roles in the planning, delivery, management, and evaluation of instructional programs. The Elementary Education Program does not provide for teacher licensure or any type of endorsement.
