The Elementary and Secondary Education (Advanced and Applied Teaching) Specialization is intended to provide in-service teachers with a curriculum sequence strongly connected to the context of their classroom practice. The focus on advancing teaching skills relies on up-to-date principles of effective teaching, learning, and assessment in urban, diverse educational settings. The specialization combines hands-on applications of student-centered pedogogy with tenets of reflective teaching. Built around a common College Core, specialized coursework in conflict resolution, data-driven classroom instruction, and classroom management is integrated with required classes in educational research, social issues impacting education in the 21st century, educational psychology, as well as academic content-specific methods. The culminating exit requirement is an action research project that requires candidates to apply the advanced teaching skills addressed throughout the program to their own professional practice. CURRICULUM SEQUENCE: PROGRAM CORE (4 COURSES); EDB 601 - Educational Research, EDB 604 - Social Issues and Education; EDB 628 - Psychology of Learning and Instruction; AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING; ONE of the following courses, depending on the content area of the graduate student enrolled in the programs: EDC 512 - Instructional Development in Foreign Language Education; EDC 513 - Instructional Development in English/Language Arts Education; EDC 514 - Instructional Development in Art Education; EDC 515 - Instructional Development In Mathematics Education; EDC 517 - Instructional Development In Science Education; SPECIALIZATION (4 COURSES); EDB 523 - Conflict Resolution in Teacher Education; EDB 574 - Data-Driven Classroom Instruction; EDB 675 - Productive School & Classroom Discipline; EDL 505 - Content Area Literacy.

Student should have 4 yr Bachelor's degree or the equivalent. Other English language Requirements: TOEFL paper-based exam: 525; Successful completion of CSU's IELP (Intensive English Language Program) Advanced Level, with a grade of 80% or better and passing COMPASS ESL scores. Completion of English language studies (Level 112) from any of the ELS Language Centers. Achieve a score of C (Pass) or better on the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE).
