Study Level

Masters

This specialization provides advanced study in the field of middle childhood education with particular emphasis being given to the design and delivery of effective mathematics or science instruction in grades four through nine. The master's program does not provide for initial teacher licensure or any type of endorsement. However, Middle Childhood licensed teachers seeking to add Mathematics or Science concentration to their MCE license can do so while earning this master's degree. The Middle Childhood Education Program prepares candidates for teaching children from grades 4 through 9 (ages 8to 14) at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program provides for concentrated study in at least two of the following content areas: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies. Students are prepared to be highly effective and qualified to teach in high need schools and districts. Taken as a whole, the curriculum focuses on the nature and needs of early adolescents as they particularly relate to the design, delivery, and evaluation of culturally and developmentally responsive instruction. Throughout the program, the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills is aided by reflective practice and inquiry. To that end, the observation of middle- and junior-high school students and settings accompanies relevant study, is followed by on-site practice, and culminates in supervised student teaching. The program includes participation in a strengthened curriculum with more than 700 hours of clinical experience- similar to the preparation used in legal and medical professions. Rigorous preparation helps to increase the likelihood that students will be hired upon graduation.
