The Department of Mechanical Engineering at KTO Karatay University was established with the aim of educating knowledgeable, skilled, creative, and entrepreneurial engineers, and of advancing society by maintaining a high level of knowledge sharing. The undergraduate program aims to present mechanical engineering subjects to students within a coherent and integrated framework; thus, it seeks to train engineers who are capable of utilizing the necessary underlying technologies to meet diverse professional needs, or who can communicate effectively with specialists in the field to carry out product design, manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance processes.

With the goal of carrying the values of the past into the future, KTO Karatay University leverages this strength to harness contemporary technologies, develop new technologies, and educate pioneering and innovative engineers in R&D. In this context, the University opens its doors wide to prepare scientists within the Faculty of Engineering for professional life, enabling them to contribute to increasing the development and prosperity level of our country.

The primary objective of our academic staff—who have proven their scientific competence through national and international research activities and possess substantial industrial experience—is to transfer their accumulated knowledge to students who are expected to contribute to the science and technology of our country, and to establish the infrastructure that will form the foundation of original science and technology transformed into production.

Within our department, facilities such as the Mechanical Dynamics Laboratory, Mechanical Workshop, Hydraulics and Pneumatics Laboratory, Measurement Laboratory, Thermal and Fluid Sciences Laboratory, and Numerical Analysis Laboratory provide students with the opportunity to observe fundamental concepts learned in core engineering courses on real systems through experimental methods, and to develop practical skills. Through these research environments, we also aim to foster a strong sense of teamwork between faculty members and students.

Our educational curriculum has been designed with an approach that balances theory and practice. The program consists of one year of English preparatory education followed by four years of Mechanical Engineering education. The department offers a Turkish-medium program supported by 30% English instruction. The University and the department are centrally located in Konya, at the heart of industrial establishments related to mechanical engineering. In addition to theoretical and practical education at the university, students are provided with supplementary industrial application opportunities, enabling them to gain experience and expertise, and to focus on areas aligned with their career goals.

For industry-oriented students, beyond summer internships, opportunities are provided each semester to work on projects closely integrated with industry, with the aim of preparing graduates to offer solutions to real industrial problems upon graduation. For academically oriented students, our goal is to equip them with the competencies required for academic life by providing an education integrated with international research centers, preparing them for both international graduate studies abroad and academic careers within the country.

The curriculum has been structured to encompass the fundamental principles of Mechanical Engineering as well as the knowledge and competencies required by modern engineers of the future. By addressing manufacturing and design together, the curriculum relates fundamental concepts to the design of products and processes that provide solutions to the problems faced by industry and society—the core purpose of engineering. Emphasis is placed on applied courses, project-based learning, skill-oriented course components, and active learning. Through our focus on both classical and emerging fields, covering fundamental concepts and practical applications, we empower students to apply their knowledge and skills across various industrial sectors and emerging technologies.

In order to obtain a Bachelor’s degree, students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering are required to complete a minimum of 40 days of internship in industrial organizations that contribute to mechanical engineering education. In addition to internships, the department also offers a workplace training program (intern engineering). Through this program, eligible senior-year students spend their 7th or 8th semester (approximately four uninterrupted months) in industry, gaining hands-on engineering experience. Intern engineers work in industry as practicing engineers, spending the entire designated period at the assigned company and fully complying with the company’s working conditions.

Graduates holding a degree in Mechanical Engineering from KTO Karatay University, equipped with the comprehensive and integrated knowledge and competencies described above, will have a distinct advantage in securing employment, particularly in high-technology companies utilizing computer-integrated manufacturing systems, as well as in research centers that develop and employ advanced automation products.
