Training aims:

The Applied Mathematics license offers a general scientific course in mathematics, operational research and statistics. The fields of activity covered by this license are therefore wide: insurance, finance, marketing, logistics, meteorology.... It allows students to acquire fundamental knowledge in mathematics, working methods making use of new techniques and technologies, computer techniques, optimization and statistics.

This license will give access to all the professional masters in mathematics, gateways have been set up towards the computer license, the fundamental mathematical licence. This License is a mandatory and essential step to grasp all the modeling power of mathematics. Its acquisition guarantees sufficient basic knowledge (both theoretical and practical) to meet the needs of the user sector.

Student assessment:

Teaching is semester. The year therefore includes two semesters S1 and S2 of approximately 15 weeks each.

Each proposed semester consists of:

of fundamental units that it is necessary to acquire to pursue in a given specialty.

methodology units which groups together the teaching subjects methodological tools intended to help the learner carry out his or her training course

transversal units which should allow the student to acquire university know-how, to master a foreign language.

discovery units which allow an opening towards other scientific fields or a deepening of the chosen field (these UE would allow, if they are suitably chosen by the student, a reorientation towards other courses at the end of the first or second semester).

The student builds his year from the fundamental, transversal and discovery UEs so that each semester represents 30 credits (ECTS).

Areas of activity targeted

  • This license leads to teaching in both basic and secondary education, sometimes with additional training and the acquisition of certain specific teaching units.

  • Essentially a career as a researcher or teacher-researcher through masters in mathematics in the various specialties. It consists of preparing the student for an international level of research through high-level specialized courses and a dissertation which is an introduction to current research.

  • It can lead to long studies in applied mathematics and a doctoral thesis.

  • This license also offers the possibility, after accelerated training, of accessing other professions (management).

  • Opportunities:

  1. Finance and insurance

Statistics and probabilities allow mathematicians in the field of insurance to assess risks, calculate premiums according to benefits and determine the provisions required for life insurance, accident insurance, damage insurance, pension funds, sickness funds and reinsurance institutions.

  1. . Biology

Biology is a sector that requires knowledge of mathematics. In particular to understand the complexity of cellular life: combinatorics, statistics, dynamics of differential equations.

  1. The environment

And more specifically meteorology. Weather requires math, for example to design a numerical model for weather forecasting, or to do numerical analysis.

  1. The medical sector

And more specifically pharmaceutical companies.

The work is mainly based on the forecasting and management of information: clinical trials, reading of results, reading of genome sequences (algorithmic, statistical, computer methods) for the identification of a virus, etc.

  1. The high-tech sector

Skills in mathematics must generally be coupled with skills in physics: fluid mechanics, sending probes and satellites into orbit, studying the trajectory of a probe, launching and maintaining a satellite in orbit, stochastic calculation, etc.

  1. IT

This sector requires knowledge of mathematics, in terms of software development, application modeling. We also call on the knowledge of mathematicians in fields such as cryptography or computer security.

  1. Studies and advice

Graduates in applied mathematics can also find work in sectors where it is not their knowledge of mathematics that is sought after, but rather their logical thinking and analytical skills. They have access to jobs in business consulting
