The Master of Arts in World Languages - French program aims to improve students’ cultural knowledge and linguistic proficiency, enhancing their professional skills and/or preparing them for further graduate study.
Program Objectives:
- Development of advanced/professional level skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French;
- Cultural acquisition through the study of French and French-speaking cultures and literature;
- Acquisition of research skills.

The Master of Arts in World Languages - French program aims to improve students’ cultural knowledge and linguistic proficiency, enhancing their professional skills and/or preparing them for further graduate study.
Program Objectives:
- Development of advanced/professional level skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French;
- Cultural acquisition through the study of French and French-speaking cultures and literature;
- Acquisition of research skills.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must also meet the following program requirements. Requirements may be more stringent than the minimum graduate school requirements.
- Candidates must hold an undergraduate major or minor in French
- Two letters of recommendation
- A personal statement in french ( Instructions [PDF] )
- Candidates must complete an oral proficiency interview in the language of their specialization with a rating of “Advanced-low” on the ACTFL scale ( Additional Information )
Conditional admission may be granted to candidates with deficiencies in french. Such candidates must complete deficiency courses including, but not limited to, FRNH 343L5 French Composition and FRNH 344L5 French Conversation . Graduate credit will not be granted for these courses.
The French faculty will review applications.
