The  Master of Arts in Studio Art  program at Eastern Michigan University aims to provide a stimulating environment for the post-undergraduate study of art and design.

The M.A. curriculum consists of studio courses and seminars designed to encourage experimentation and critical thinking. Students are instrumental in defining their creative work’s focus and direction; the faculty provides opportunities for growth and development within a particular area while also encouraging cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary work and experiences. Through art history and seminar courses, M.A. students explore the diverse cultural influences on art, the role of the artist in society, and the relationship between studio practices and art and design history. The M.A. degree in studio art culminates in a solo or small group exhibition.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must also meet the following program criteria:

  • Have an undergraduate degree with a major in art, with a minimum grade point average of 2.8 in art classes
  • ​Three letters of recommendation.
  • Letter of Intent that concisely expresses the applicant’s goals and objectives as an artist/designer and the reason(s) for pursuing graduate study. The statement should also reference the artwork submitted and clarify how its content pertains to the applicant’s objectives/goals.
  • A portfolio of 12-15 images, videos, and/or audio files of the applicant’s studio work, with a corresponding list stating the title, medium, size, and completion date for each artwork submitted.
