The Interior Design Programs (undergraduate and graduate) mission at Eastern Michigan University is the academic preparation of students to solve problems related to the function, health/safety/well-being, and quality of interior environments.

The Programs promote design research, critical thinking, and creativity in design decisions applied to all interior spaces, components, and elements in the built environment. These decisions reflect consideration for social welfare, cultural implications, and global and economic elements.

The curriculum blends theory and technical skills with sensitivity to environmentally responsible/sustainable design issues and consideration for the needs of all users regardless of age, physical stature, or disability status.

Graduates are well prepared to enter the workplace with a skill set that allows them to thrive professionally and work collaboratively in both the commercial and residential areas of the profession.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must also meet the following program requirements. Requirements may be more stringent than the minimum graduate school requirements.

  • Have a 2.75 or better undergraduate GPA
  • Have earned a Bachelor of Art or Bachelor of Science degree in interior design or equivalent from an accredited institution(see note)
  • Submit a one-page statement indicating personal goals for graduate study in interior design

Note - Students who do not hold a B.A. or B.S. degree in design or architecture are encouraged to work on a second bachelor’s degree rather than seek a master’s degree. This would align with the undergraduate program’s accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and the professional NCIDQ exam/qualifications practitioners would complete.
