The Bachelor of Arts in Art and Visual Technology (AVT) is a liberal arts program that emphasizes breadth of experience in the context of a liberal arts education rather than professional specialization. In addition to completing the university-wide general education requirements, electives, and either a foreign language through the intermediate level or a minor, AVT majors must complete our core foundations experience, breadth and experience, art history and critical theory requirement, and required concentration courses. Sculpture at the George Mason University School of Art is an open-source studio and lab where ideas are given form. Through close association with a diverse faculty, students acquire broad technical skills, learn contextual and historical awareness of their discipline, and develop conceptual strategies that produce the independence necessary to compete for graduate study and as a practicing studio artist in the greater community. The sculpture program has developed a rich history in site-specific, public, and community projects where students are encouraged to assist faculty and local and visiting artists, or have the opportunity to create their own work throughout the metropolitan area.
