Since 1972, within the context of a collaboration between Heidelberg University and Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences, the faculty of the Medical Informatics academic programme has very successfully been educating Medical Informatics Specialists. In international rankings, this academic programme is rated extremely highly.
The objective of the degree programme is the acquisition and deepening of knowledge of current relevant scientific methods used in Medical Informatics along with the ability to adequately and effectively apply these in problem-solving processes in the various fields of healthcare and medicine, in the areas of patient care, therapy, and diagnosis, as well as in research. Graduates will be also have the ability to collaborate in the development of new methods and procedures for specific problems and to provide a critical assessment of their effectiveness and efficiency. This scientific university education provides students with all of the competencies required to pursue responsible positions in research, development, and management in industry, hospitals, or at software companies or universities.

Admission Requirements
- A degree in Medical Informatics (Bachelor's or Diploma, subject-specific component at least 50%) or in degree programs with essentially the same content, especially Computer Science, obtained with above-average success at a domestic or foreign university for which a standard period of study of at least three academic years is stipulated, or an equivalent qualification (e.g. Bioinformatics, Medical Engineering, Technical or Applied Computer Science).
- The following factors, in particular, can be taken into account when evaluating the above-average result:
- A university degree grade of at least "good" or ECTS grade "B" according to § 3 paragraph 1 number 2, or
- Two letters of recommendation, preferably from professors at the university where the final examination, which is a prerequisite for admission to this Master's program, was completed; if these documents are not written in German, an officially certified translation into German is required, or
- Proof of the professional classification of the application within the university during the final examination, which is a prerequisite for admission to this Master's program (ranking).
- Very good German language skills are an essential requirement.
